Myanmar

Welcome to Burma, a beautiful, ancient, and mysterious land that is largely unknown to the West, and whose language, Burmese, is all but unheard of.

Burmese is a beautiful language with a complex writing system, and it goes along quite well with the land it comes from. What I find most fascinating about Burma is the many ancient buddhist temples, orange and red-clad monks, and giant stone-carved buddhas lying in the jungles, letting time pass as slowly as it did two thousand years ago.

Sadly though, Burma is also a land that's been on lockdown under the rule of a military junta since 1962. The junta have completely stifled the civil rights of the Burmese people, which has led to poverty and violence.

A woman by the name of Aung San Suu Kyi won the democratic election of May 1990, but has been under house arrest ever since as the military government refused to step down and acknowledge the fact that everybody hates them. Burma has been under the rule of Than Shwe since 1992. Aung San Suu Kyi continues to be a symbol of political oppression and a human rights leader.

The Burmese language is a member of the Tibeto-Burman language family, which includes the langauges of the Southeast Asian peninsula, Tibet, and the Subcontinent. Burmese is famous for its alphabet comprised of circles, half-circles, and curli-cues.
