Basic Mandarin Zone

Flag of China

We are the Chinese. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

Mandarin is spoken by around 836 million people and is the official Beijing dialect of Chinese. There are many dialects of Chinese, and over 1.3 billion people speak one dialect or another.

I've been fascinated with this language since I was seven years old; the tones, the amazing and beautiful writing system, and all the profoundly rich culture of the Chinese people. I've never gotten over my love for China and now I want to share that love with you.

For a long time I was reluctant to add Mandarin to the website in favor of a lesser-known but equally important dialect called Cantonese. But to be honest, (and don't tell the Cantonese students) Mandarin is a far prettier dialect and I'm excited to offer it to you.

Chinese may seem highly difficult, but it's actually more manageable than many Western languages. Sure, it takes years to become literate, but it's a journey that will be full of all kinds of exciting and foreign things. China is rich in so many ways and their language is just the beginning.
