American English Zone

Los Angeles

Like what-EVER! Ever heard this phrase before? It's one of many all-American phrases that come from the streets of Los Angeles. Many people around the world are familiar with the language of the United States, but many don't fully understand our slang, idioms, and nicknames, especially those used in pop culture.

Welcome to the American English Zone! This is a place for all you foreigners hoping to learn and improve your English, but more specifically, to understand American pop culture.

This project is about teaching you how to understand all the cultural references in things like music, movies, TV shows, and comics. This is stuff you'll never find in an English class, no matter where you are.

Through the use of pop culture, my goal is to broaden your understanding of the things we say in everyday circumstances and the contexts we use them in.

Each lesson in this series focuses on a song, a comic strip, a TV clip, or even an excerpt from a book, all of it being 100% American and 100% decoded for the foreign mind. The lessons are numbered, but feel free to pick and choose at random and explore the world of colloquial English.
